Massage for Chronic Pain in Moore, OK: What Actually Helps

If you've been dealing with the same ache for months, you've probably heard "just rest it" or "learn to live with it." I'm Jonathan Herman, a licensed massage therapist in Moore and one of only four Certified Pain Hackers in Oklahoma. I've worked with hurting people since 2014, and I want to explain how massage fits into chronic pain, what a session looks like, and when it's worth trying.

What Counts as Chronic Pain?

Chronic pain is pain that lasts three months or longer. It often shows up as a stubborn neck or shoulder ache, lower back pain, frequent tension headaches, or pain that travels into the hip or leg. Many people assume lasting pain means something is permanently damaged. In practice, it's often tied to muscle tension, trigger points, and tight connective tissue that built up over time and never got addressed.

How Massage May Help

Massage isn't a cure-all, and I won't promise one. It can be a useful part of managing pain. The techniques I use are:

Trigger point therapy: pressure on tight knots in the muscle that can refer pain to other areas of the body.

Myofascial release: slow, sustained pressure on the connective tissue around your muscles to ease tension and improve movement.

Neuromuscular therapy: focused work that takes the nervous system's role in pain into account.

Assisted stretching: guided stretching to improve range of motion and reduce stiffness.

Which of these we use depends on what I find when we assess you.

Does It Have to Hurt to Work?

No. Effective massage doesn't have to be painful. Some work feels intense in a "good pressure" way, but you're in charge. Tell me when to ease off and I will. Your nervous system relaxes more when you're comfortable, which helps the work go further.

What a Chronic Pain Session Looks Like

We talk first. You tell me where it hurts, how long it's been going on, and what makes it better or worse.

I assess. I look at how you move and check the muscles around the problem area, which is often not where the pain is felt.

We work on the source. The session is built around you, not a script.

We plan next steps. I'll suggest stretches or habits to help between visits.

Sessions are 60 minutes ($80) or 90 minutes ($115). The 90-minute option is a good fit for pain in more than one area.

Who Might Benefit

People often come in for neck and shoulder pain, lower back pain, sciatica-type pain, tension headaches, and repetitive stress from desk work or physical jobs. If you've seen a doctor and want to add hands-on care to your plan, that's a good time to book.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many sessions will I need? It depends on how long you've had the pain and how your body responds. Many people notice a difference after the first visit, and regular sessions tend to work better for long-standing pain than a one-time visit. I'll give you an honest recommendation after we meet.

Should I see a doctor first? If you have new, severe, or unexplained pain, numbness, or weakness, see a doctor first. Massage works best alongside medical care, not instead of it.

Can I add red light therapy? Yes. You can add red light therapy to your session for $30.
